ABOUT THE PROJECT

From manual preparationto automated manufacturing.

GIB-FMT is a Eurostars-funded collaboration between Gut in Balance, Medesign, Harro Höfliger and Hvidovre Hospital, developing automated manufacturing of FMT capsules for hospital-based production.

About the technology
OBJECTIVES

Our objective is to make FMT capsule production more accessible, scalable and reliable by developing an automated, hospital-based production platform.

  1. Standardise production

Develop controlled workflows for consistent and reproducible capsule manufacturing.

  2. Enable hospital-based production

Give hospitals the infrastructure to produce FMT capsules within their own clinical settings.

  3. Ensure quality and traceability

Support controlled processing, documented workflows and traceability from donor material to finished capsules.

  4. Support long-term storage

Build on laboratory-validated storage stability of up to four years at −80°C.

  5. Prepare for the evolving regulatory landscape

Develop production infrastructure with the EU SoHO framework, applicable quality requirements and future hospital implementation in mind.

  6. Improve accessibility

Work towards reducing production costs and making FMT treatment more accessible to patients.

Presentation · NorMIC 2026

GIB-FMT Invited to Present at NorMIC 2026 in Finland

The GIB-FMT project has been invited to give an oral presentation at NorMIC 26th of August 2026 in Finland. This provides an opportunity to present the project’s development of an automated FMT capsule production platform to the scientific community and share our progress towards more standardised, hospital-based production.

Poster · Nordic Innovation Fair 2026

GIB-FMT Presented at Nordic Innovation Fair 2026

The GIB-FMT project was presented as a poster at Nordic Innovation Fair 2026. The event provided an opportunity to showcase our innovative approach to FMT capsule production and raise awareness of the project’s potential to support more accessible and scalable hospital-based manufacturing.

Clinical research · Lundbeck Foundation

Major Danish Study in Anorexia Nervosa Supported by DKK 7.2 Million from the Lundbeck Foundation

The University of Copenhagen (KU), in collaboration with Hvidovre Hospital, has initiated a larger study involving patients with anorexia nervosa in Denmark, supported by DKK 7.2 million in funding from the Lundbeck Foundation.

The study uses GIB-FMT capsules produced with Gut in Balance’s existing bag-based manual production system, which integrates homogenisation, filtration and dosing, to investigate the potential role of gut microbiota-based treatment in anorexia nervosa.

This clinical research represents an important step towards exploring new treatment approaches and advancing scientific understanding of the relationship between the gut microbiota and anorexia nervosa. It also demonstrates the clinical application of existing production technology as we develop our next-generation automated capsule manufacturing platform.
